Advocacy Action Lab

How you and your work can influence policy change.

Overview

In this comprehensive, multi-modal workshop, public health faculty and staff will learn fundamental advocacy skills, workshop specific policy issues, and gain real-world insights on how to achieve public health goals.

Participants will build upon their own scholarly work to identify potential advocacy opportunities and develop an action plan. Workshop activities include action planning sessions, expert presentations and panels, and networking opportunities.

Background

Johns Hopkins is committed to bringing evidence and expertise to the policymaking space as part of our mission for a healthier, more equitable world. The Lerner Center for Public Health Advocacy is hosting a multi-modal workshop that offers practical insights, knowledge, and skills to enhance influence with decisionmakers at all levels, from city councils to international governing bodies. 

Objectives

  • Demystify the “who, how, what, when, and where” of public health policy change
  • Gain practical advocacy skills that can be immediately applied to your work
  • Identify a clear policy 'ask’ associated with your public health issue
  • Craft an advocacy plan that includes a series of targeted objectives, actionable tactics, and organizational partners

Eligibility

The Advocacy Action Lab is open to faculty and staff affiliated with an academic health institution (such as public health, nursing, and medicine). The intended audience includes public health professionals as well as those who are certified public health professionals (CPH), certified health education specialists (CHES), nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician assistants.

Successful applicants are individuals who are interested in engaging in health policy change on a specific health problem with a clear intended impact.

Cost

The cost of this training is $3,400. 

Attendees who are employees at Johns Hopkins Medicine or Johns Hopkins University may be able to use tuition remission to cover the cost, pending eligibility. Attendees from other institutions may be eligible for tuition support through their employer.

Partial scholarships are available. 

Priority will be given to those demonstrating need and potential impact. Please contact Meghan Ames if you anticipate needing scholarship assistance.

Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) 

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 15.75 AMA PRA Category I Credits(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) 

Sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Lerner Center for Public Health Advocacy, a National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. approved provider, this program offers up to 16 CECH for CHES® and MCHES® (entry-level and advanced). Continuing Competency credits: 0. 

National Board of Public Health Examiners (NCPHE) 

This program has been approved for 16 Certified in Public Health (CPH) credits by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is an approved CPH provider by the National Board of Public Health Examiners.
