The GLYCOSA Research Study: A Study of Sleep in Type II Diabetics
What is GLYCOSA?
The GLYCOSA Research Study is a medical research study. The study is being conducted by Johns Hopkins University with support from the ResMed Corporation.
What is the purpose of the GLYCOSA Research Study?
The GLYCOSA Research Study will examine the relationship between the use of PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) for sleep apnea and whether it will improve diabetic control. Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person has periods of shallow or no breathing during sleep. Over time this can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.
Who can join?
Participants should be
- 18 years or older
- Type II diabetics
- Not using insulin
Why should I participate in the GLYCOSA Research Study?
If you are invited to participate in and decide to join the GLYCOSA Research Study, you will be contributing to medical knowledge about the relationship between diabetes and sleep apnea.
Is the information I give you confidential?
All of the information given by participants is held in strict confidence and will be used for research purposes only.
What will happen?
We will ask you questions about your health and medical conditions. If you are eligible for the study, we will ask you to have a sleep study. In addition, we will invite you to our clinic where you will undergo a number of different medical tests.
Study procedures will include
- An overnight sleep study
- Blood sugar monitoring with CGMS (a machine that will record your sugar levels over a period of several days)
- Blood drawing to measure the levels of cholesterol, fat and other factors
- Blood pressure measurements
- Interviews about your health and sleep
- Monitoring of your breathing during sleep with an ApneaLink (a device that counts the number of dips in blood oxygen)
- Treatment in some subjects with PAP (Positive Airway Pressure, a device that keeps the upper airway open during sleep)
How will I benefit?
We will send you (and your doctor, if you wish) results from medical tests. All of these results will be provided free of charge. In addition, we will compensate you for completing all of the study procedures. We will also provide parking and meals on the days of your clinic visits.
How long will it take?
The study consists of two phases.
- Phase 1 You will complete two visits and an overnight sleep study to determine if you have sleep apnea. If you have sleep apnea, you will continue on to Phase 2.
- Phase 2 Phase 2 has several visits. Each visit will take approximately 1 hour to complete. You will receive counseling on diet and exercise. Some individuals will be asked to use PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) at home when they are sleeping.
