Information For Participants

Since 1988, the ALIVE cohort study has conducted semi-annual follow up with over 3,000 HIV-infected- , and at-risk, uninfected-people who inject drugs(PWIDs) in Baltimore City. The current median age of participants is 48 years old and the study population is about 90% African American.

The ALIVE Study offers all participants:

  • Free and confidential testing for HIV and other diseases
  • Post-HIV test counseling
  • Referrals to medical and social services
  • Education about how to reduce the risk of getting HIV
  • Links to other research studies that impact the study population

Please use the links on the left to see some of our participants' contributions to the study and clinic, access resources for our study population, learn about the participant advisory board, and browse our old newsletters to experience the ALIVE study through time.

ALIVE Study Staff conducts outreach in the community including attending community events (e.g., Day at the Market) and locations serving our participants.

In order to reach participants facing transportation challenges and other barriers in accessing the clinic, and to expand our outreach, we are also utilizing a mobile van.
