Health, Economic and Long-Term Social Impact of Injuries

The Johns Hopkins University–Hanoi University of Public Health Research Program on Health, Economic, and Societal Consequences of Trauma and Injuries in Vietnam (JHU-Hanoi HEalS), funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), is a collaborative initiative addressing the urgent public health challenges related to trauma and injuries in Vietnam.
By strengthening local research capacity, the program aims to create sustainable systems to understand and manage the long-term effects of injury and post-injury rehabilitation within Vietnamese health systems.
Global Impact
The JHU-Hanoi HEalS initiative not only enhances individual career paths but also strengthens global health systems. Through knowledge exchange and research collaboration, we’re shaping a future where trauma and injury responses are grounded in evidence and sustainability.
Program Overview
Mission
JHU-Hanoi HEalS is committed to:
- Building a core group of researchers through long-term training programs.
- Supporting sustainable research development in Vietnam.
- Facilitating a center of excellence at Hanoi University of Public Health (HUPH).
- Promoting national policy dialogue and international collaboration.
Training and Capacity Building
At the heart of JHU-Hanoi HEalS is a robust training model that leverages U.S. expertise to empower Vietnamese researchers. Our approach includes:
- Long-term training for students at HUPH to ensure continuity and sustainability.
- Short-term non-degree opportunities, including workshops, online courses, and monthly webinars focused on high-priority topics in trauma and rehabilitation research.
- Leadership development to cultivate future public health leaders in Vietnam.
Center of Excellence at HUPH
A cornerstone of the program is the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Injury and Rehabilitation Research at HUPH. This center will:
- Serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research on injury and rehabilitation.
- Offer ongoing training and professional development.
- Act as a catalyst for evidence-based policy and practice in Vietnam and the region.
Summer Fellowship at Johns Hopkins
A key highlight of the program is the six-week summer fellowship hosted at Johns Hopkins University for visiting Vietnamese fellows. This immersive experience includes:
- Intensive academic coursework and hands-on workshops.
- Mentored research development, including thesis proposal design.
- Engagement with global public health leaders and peers.
- Opportunities for lasting professional network development.
