Adolescent Violence and Injury Detection System

The Adolescent Violence Injury Detection (AVID) project is a digital health initiative addressing adolescent suicide in Karnataka, India. This multi-phase project harnesses artificial intelligence-driven technology to identify at-risk adolescents and provide timely support.

AVID aims to develop and implement an artificial intelligence-powered mHealth tool for early detection of suicidal risk among adolescents. Designed for seamless integration into school and community settings, the tool supports proactive intervention and care.

Program Overview

Objectives
  • Identify key predictors of adolescent injury and violence through a comprehensive review of existing literature.
  • Develop and validate an artificial intelligence-based predictive model to detect adolescents at risk of violence and injuries, and benchmark its performance against traditional logistic regression models.
  • Conduct formative qualitative research—including interviews and focus group discussions—to explore contextual factors influencing adolescent injury and violence. Insights will inform the design of a mobile and web-based platform, alongside a review of regulatory frameworks and existing system capacities to ensure effective integration.
Phases
  • Phase 1: Foundational research and development to inform the next stages.
  • Phases 2 and 3: Deployment of the early detection system and implementation of targeted interventions.
Implications and Impact
  • The development of an early detection tool—integrated within local health and education systems—holds potential for future expansion into broader areas of adolescent health.
  • By synthesizing data from diverse sources, the project will create a robust, high-quality database capturing empirical patterns of adolescent injuries. This will deepen our understanding of risk factors while improving the temporal and geographical scope of available evidence.
  • The integration of artificial intelligence algorithms with this enriched dataset will offer fresh insights into key debates in the literature, advancing both scientific knowledge and the effectiveness of prevention strategies for adolescent injuries.
Challenges in Reporting

Adolescent Suicides

Suicides are grossly underreported, reasons Include:

  • Misclassification of injuries

  • Subjectivity of data collectors

  • Overlapping risk factors

  • Unfavorable attitudes and stigma, stereotyping

  • Legal implications

  • Lack of early detection – Caregivers and educators often struggle to recognize early warning signs due to limited awareness or training

  • Inadequate mental health services – Existing strategies are often ineffective, with services remaining inaccessible or unaffordable
