Duff Gillespie, PhD

Formerly Co-Principal Investigator, Advance Family Planning
Duff Gillespie is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Co-Principal Investigator for the Advance Family Planning imitative. Previously, he served as Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Global Health Bureau at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He has worked in the population and health field for over 50 years. Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2004, he was a Visiting Scholar at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. He received his PhD from Washington University in Saint Louis.
Beth Fredrick, BA

Beth Fredrick was the Co-Principal Investigator for the Advance Family Planning initiative. She also served as Deputy Director of the Gates Institute and co-founded the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health BSPH Center for Public Health Advocacy. Before joining BSPH in 2009, Beth was Executive Vice President of the International Women’s Health Coalition and Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President for Programs of the Guttmacher Institute. In both positions she guided strategic planning and was a lead architect of and fundraiser for major research, policy, and communication initiatives. She was a Bell Fellow with Harvard University and an adjunct faculty with New York University’s Wagner School for Public Service. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin.
Sabrina Karklins, MPA, BA Independent Consultant Formerly Project Director, Advance Family Planning
Sabrina Karklins was Project Director of Advance Family Planning (AFP). Since joining the Gates Institute in 2004 she has developed and implemented numerous research and advocacy projects on reproductive health and family planning. She earned a Master of Public Administration in public health and international development from the University of Washington, Evans School of Public Policy and Governance and a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and German studies and language from Michigan State University.
