The Failed Fairy Tale of Venezuela’s Health System: Q&A with Journalist Ricardo Barbar
Department & Center Events
About the Event
Join Venezuelan journalist Ricardo Barbar for a presentation sharing highlights on his investigative reporting for Prodavinci that exposed the myth of public and free health in Venezuela—a country once acknowledged for its free and quality public health care system, high standards in epidemiological surveillance and global health achievements including being the first country to eliminate malaria. But a series of restrictive public policies and government decisions deteriorated Venezuela's health care services, rendering the country unable to provide basic health services for its population.
Barbar's presentation will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Daniela C. Rodríguez, DrPH, MPH, of the Department of International Health's Health System Program.
This event is co-sponsored by the Health Systems Program of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of International Health, the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health, the Latinx Public Health Network, the Pulitzer Center, and Global Health NOW. Pizza will be provided; please RSVP to attend!

Prodavinci also analyzed data and meticulously mapped inequities in COVID-19 vaccine availability that have been overlooked. Ricardo was nominated for a Premio Gabo journalism award for his coverage of breast cancer in Venezuela and received an honorable mention in 2022 at the Inter American Press Association's Awards for Excellence in Journalism.
