Join the Capitol Hill Steering Committee on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Security for a webinar, Funding and Sustaining Long-Term Investments in Pandemic Preparedness, on Wednesday, May 25, at 12pm (ET).
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused trillions of dollars in US economic losses and made clear that the United States must bolster our public health emergency preparedness posture. We need to break the standard “feast or famine” approach to funding health preparedness. In the past, the Federal government has typically responded to previous public health emergencies by providing unprecedented amounts of emergency money, followed by years of chronically underfunding our health security programs.
Consistent, long-term funding for health security and pandemic preparedness is needed to sustain the hard-fought gains made during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while providing the resources needed to prevent future outbreaks from becoming pandemics.
The President’s FY23 budget request included $88.2 billion in mandatory funding to, “fund transformative improvements in our capabilities to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging biological catastrophes.” This session will explore the outlook for this budget request and the options for future of pandemic preparedness and health security funding. Speakers will expand on the need for bi-partisan collaboration to secure preparedness funding and possible budget mechanisms that would lead us to become a more resilient nation.
