The REAL Fathers Initiative is an integrated violence prevention program that partners with community members as mentors to young fathers. Through one-on-one, couple, and group mentoring, young fathers learn new attitudes, knowledge, and skills and gain peer and mentor support to practice healthier communication, conflict resolution, and parenting skills. Dr. Kohli will present findings from participatory qualitative research with mentors, young fathers, and their wives to understand how the program supports young men to prevent intimate partner violence and violent discipline of children under five in Uganda. Dr. Kohli will also share recent findings on the effectiveness of the program to prevent fathers' and mothers' use of violence from the quasi-experimental, longitudinal evaluation of REAL Fathers in a new country setting, Rwanda.
