991- Ethiopia- Knowledge Generation and Management - Technical Assistance to the International Institute for Primary Health Care-Ethiopia (IPHC-E)

The IPHC-E was established in 2016 as a collaborative initiative between the Federal Ministry of Health in Ethiopia and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). The Institute was created to serve as a conduit for the promotion, learning, and research of strategies to support primary health care (PHC) systems that were developed and adapted by Ethiopia and to share these with the rest of the world. The Institute offers training programs to national and international audiences, conducts implementation research, and conducts advocacy activities to share the experiences of Ethiopia’s Health Extension Program (HEP). JH BSPH provides technical assistance with curriculum development and implementation of training programs, networking and partnership creation, management of governance structures for the Institute, and expansion of the Institute’s resource center and advocacy materials. The roles and responsibilities of students will include: writing a manuscript for a PHC digest, editorial services for PHC digest, editing issue briefs and other materials, participate in research activities such as evidence synthesis/systematic review, participate in transforming modules for ‘Manuscript writing training” from face-to-face to online with support from the technical staff on online training, participate in implementation dissemination workshop and other workshops of the team. Also assisting completing a monograph on PHC definitions, activities and products of the team and other activities of the Knowledge Generation and Management Team

A tight knit team at the Institute who work hard and engage in formal activities with the Ministry of Health and other partners frequently, but who also often eat lunch together, keep in touch via WhatsApp and other media, and take care of each other as well as of visitors. The student will be expected to dress professionally and demonstrate utmost respect and professionalism, particularly when interacting with other stakeholders, but can also expect a warm reception from the Institute team and to make good friends with colleagues. The JHSPH is a small team of one faculty member and a project coordinator, who interact frequently and work in a collegial and supportive manner.

As part of the IIfPHC-E/JHSPH team, the student will be actively involved in IPHC-E’s strategic support to the Ministry of Health, including engaging with emerging leaders in country and supporting national-level initiatives to continue to evolve and strengthen the Health Extension Program.

I am generally very responsive to email/other communication channels, and collegial and collaborative with student RAs/TAs. I work to ensure that every student that works with me gets to participate in something that is interesting and exciting to them and results in some key skills, opportunities, and/or products for them. My best relationships are with self-motivated students who enjoy working collaboratively.
