What sparked your interest in environmental science?
Growing up, I wanted to be a marine biologist. I know, a bold statement from a Kansas girl. I found great delight in the natural world and the creatures around us. As I continued to grow and learn, I began to see the environmental crisis we have faced. However, I also noticed that our health and basic needs—food, water, and shelter—are dependent on systems that are in jeopardy. I saw environmental health as the most preventative medicine possible. Rather than healing a single disease, environmental health focuses on healing the systems that caused the disease. I knew I wanted a profession that helped both the people and the animals, plants, and earthly systems that make our island home so beautiful. Environmental health does just that.
Why did you choose Johns Hopkins?
I love the school's interdisciplinary values embedded in the program. I saw them doing tangible work in communities and wanted to be a part of something good.
What is your favorite thing about living in Baltimore?
I love its weirdness! There are so many cool, niche things to do all around the city that keep you busy. Plus, the people are just the best.

What has been the highlight of your experience so far?
I enjoyed all the elective courses I was able to take. The program is pretty flexible and allows you to explore a wide range of options and interests. Plus, I meet so many interesting folks in all my classes!
What advice do you have for prospective students interested in joining the EHE community?
Take your time. The first year is tricky as the term system is quite an adjustment. It's not as hard as it seems. Take your time and be intentional with your learning. Try to really dive into all the readings, details, and wonderful speakers in your coursework. You will get much more out of the program if you bring intentionality to your work.
What are your interests outside of your studies?
I'm a big marathon runner and I enjoy rock climbing. I also love to read when I can.
