Project Description

We have established an noncommunicable diseases (NCD) cohort in Nepal since 2013 by selecting 3000 randomly selected households from rural Nepal. This is the largest NCD cohort in Nepal and perhaps among very few cohort from low income countries. We conduct periodic surveys in our cohort using survey questionnaires, physical measurement, and biochemical analysis. We use these data to study the epidemiology of NCDs and their major risk factors. After assessing the burden of the problem, we design and implement a community-based intervention to prevent and control such diseases and their risk factors using community health workers. We also completed the first population based study estimating sodium intake using 24 h urine from Nepal and currently running a study to estimate the prevalence of chronic kidney disease and its association with heat stress. So, students can benefit by engaging in one of our projects and gain hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of public health research and community engagement. Student can participate actively in ongoing projects by supporting data collection, analysis, report drafting, and various other field activities related to community health workers. We also welcome ideas from students.
